Pearl Bates's extraordinary character paintings, which have been described as 'Schiele goes fashion', have been exhibited and collected all over the world - including New York City, Santa Barabara, Marbella, Zurich, Berlin, Antwerp and London. Her work also features in two books - 'Imagemakers' and 'The Big Book of Fashion Illustration', both published by Mitchell Beazley. Recent commissions include a giant mural on the side of a building in central Brighton, sponsored by Southern Water.

With a background in theatre, Pearl uses paint, ink, pencil and collage to explore the hidden, magical dimensions of real people who have captured the artist's imagination. Fusing together a diverse range of inspirations such as haut couture, street culture, music, film, dance, architecture and the natural environment, Pearl creates work that is fresh, unique and exciting.

A graduate from London's Central Saint Martin's College of Art with a degree in theatre design, Pearl spent time living in both Berlin and New York City before moving to Brighton, East Sussex, where she is currently based.

"Some of the most original work I've seen."
Actor and writer John Cleese
